Biosketch
Dr. Charles Frederick Bartlett is a distinguished historian specializing in law and political economy in the early modern world. He holds a Doctorate and Master's degree in Ancient History from Harvard University, a Master's degree in Classics from New York University, and a Bachelor's degree in History and Classics from McGill University. Before joining the University of Miami in 2021, Dr. Bartlett taught at Duke University and Harvard.
His research centers on the commercial, legal, and political ideas and institutions of European states, and he has explored these same themes in Latin America. Currently, Dr. Bartlett is engaged in various projects, including his book project that examines how Roman law influenced the development of political economy in the 16th and 18th centuries. Additionally, he is co-authoring a translation of "De Indiciis" by Francesco Casoni from 1557, which discusses the legal and administrative culture of early modern Italy. He is also involved in editing a volume on the historical and contemporary relationships between law and political economy. His valuable contributions to the understanding of legal and economic history make him a highly esteemed member of the academic community.
